On Friday I ended up eating a lot more food at the social event we went to, then I came home and had a massive dessert, and made a few more poor choices on Saturday morning.
But on Saturday afternoon I had an epiphany when I was reflecting on why I kept failing at executing these goals.
This was a reminder of the idea that every second we’re making decisions and those decisions are either moving us closer to our goals or further away from our goals. For example, with each word you read you are making a decision to read the next one, however you might get to a point in this where you make a decision to stop reading.
Well this is similar to a diet in that we start off with good intentions, but then when we become tired or fatigued, we make bad decisions. But the bad decisions are only in an instant and all we needed to do was make a series of small decisions to resist the bad thought and not take the bad action.
Every day we make decisions about whether we pursue our goals, how aggressively we pursue them, and whether we become better, stay the same, or get worse. I’m pumped about the opportunity to start reflecting on my decisions more regularly at the start of the day, middle of the day, and then get really detailed on the decisions I’m making in the afternoon.
It might be about making a plan in the morning (which is a decision on how we’ll spend our time), and then reaffirm that decision throughout the morning when I remind myself of why I made the decision and not let myself negotiate with the decisions I’ve already made.
This might sound a bit absurd, but I can’t explain how pumped I am to try this out in my life and go through my days making decisions that are in line with my goals for wealth, health and my relationships.
We can act in spite of how we feel, we don’t need to listen to the weaker version of ourselves when it begins negotiating with us, and when things get tough we just need to break it down into a series of really small decisions about the thoughts we push into our brain, and the actions we take in response to these.
Over time if we can get into a pattern of doing this, we will rewire our brain and become stronger and better.
